BOPP - Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene

BOPP is one of the most widely used films in food packaging, especially for snacks, biscuits, candies, and dry goods.

Why is it popular:

  • Very high clarity and gloss

  • Crisp, stiff hand-feel (the classic “snack bag sound”)

  • Excellent printability

  • Good moisture resistance

  • Low cost

  • Very suitable as an outer layer in laminated bags

Key Properties of BOPP:

  • High transparency & gloss

  • Good stiffness & crisp feel

  • Good barrier to moisture (but not oxygen)

  • Good dimensional stability

  • Excellent for roto/flexo printing

  • Not heat-sealable on its own → needs CPP/PE on inside

Common structures:

  • BOPP / CPP (classic snack pouch)

  • BOPP / PE

  • BOPP / VMPET / PE

  • BOPP / AL / PE

Pearlized BOPP (White BOPP)

A milky/white OPP film with a smooth look.

Features:

  • Opaque

Coated BOPP (Acrylic, PVdC)

Extra coatings provide more barrier and better printability.

Acrylic-coated BOPP:

  • Higher gloss

  • Better ink adhesion

PVdC-coated BOPP:

  • Improved barrier against oxygen & moisture

Metallized BOPP (MBOPP)

BOPP that has a thin layer of metal (usually aluminum).
