Nylon - Polyamide (PA)
Nylon is known for being the strongest and most puncture-resistant film among common packaging materials.
-
Excellent puncture resistance (best among all common films)
-
Strong tensile strength
-
Good flexibility even in low temperatures
-
Good oxygen barrier
-
High durability
-
Can be used for vacuum and retort applications
Because of these qualities, Nylon is often used in the middle layers of laminated structures:
-
PA / PE (vacuum bags)
-
PET / PA / PE
-
PA / AL / PE
-
PA / CPP (retort / 121°C heating)
Types of Nylon used in packaging
BOPA — Biaxially Oriented Polyamide
This is the common and standard Nylon film used in food packaging.
Features:
-
Very high strength
-
Excellent puncture resistance
-
Good gas barrier
-
Good clarity
-
Works well in laminations
Typical thickness: 15µ, 20µ, 25µ
(15µ is most common.)
Retort-grade Nylon
Nylon enhanced to withstand 121°C high-temperature sterilization.
Used for:
-
Retort pouches
-
Ready-to-eat meals
-
Soups / sauces
